In the crucial seconds of overtime in the most

anticipated game of the year, Cameron Miller stood

on the free throw line prepared to shoot the

potentially game winning baskets. The Lancers’

game against the Sunnyside Blue Devils was highly

anticipated by high school basketball fans all over

Tucson. Sunnyside was ranked #1 in Division II with

an (11-4) record and the Lancers were ranked #10 with a (10-4) record.
The Lancers came out strong scoring 8 unanswered points to begin the game. The Blue Devils gained some traction and the score was within three or four points for the entire game. Sunnyside ended halftime with a 30-26 point lead. After a halftime pep talk from coach Brian Holstrom the Lancers were ready to gain the lead. The Lancers ended the third quarter with a five point lead and in the final seconds of an extremely tight fourth quarter the score was tied at 68. Entering overtime with the roar of the student section behind them the Lancers prepared to seal their victory. Junior Cameron Miller made two critical free throws and a layup that the Lancers used to secure their 74-68 victory. “It was an extremely tough game the bench and the student section rushed the court in excitement after the electric win. “It was a rewarding team win against one of the best teams in the state in front of a huge crowd in our gym. This game proved we are capable of beating anybody and I know our school community is really excited to see how far we can go… We just have to remember it’s a process and that each game deserves our entire focus” said Coach Holstrom. Key players included juniors Alec McCall who got 11 rebounds and fouled out Sunnyside’s top player, Cameron Miller with 13 points and 9 assists including a key layup and free throws to take the lead in overtime, and Isaac Cruz with 14 points. Other key players included sophomore Rylan O’Brien with 13 points and lead scorer senior Ethan Parkhurst who scored 21 points and 12 rebounds. “This game was easily one of the most fun I have ever been to, the energy was intense in the entire gym. I was constantly stressing out over the score but seeing the team get that huge win was rewarding” said senior Elana Jacob.
